Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Runbox with my existing email client?
Runbox fully supports IMAP, POP, and SMTP, meaning it works seamlessly with any standard email client or app, including Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Linux/Mutt clients, and mobile apps on iOS and Android. All connections use SSL encryption to keep your email secure in transit. You can find our server settings and port details in the Email Program Server Settings guide.
Does Runbox work on mobile?
You can access Runbox on any mobile device using any email app that supports IMAP — including the native Mail app on iPhone and iPad, K-9 Mail on Android, and eM Client on both platforms. Our webmail also works in mobile browsers. Setup guides for popular mobile clients are available in our Help Centre.
Runbox also has a Progressive Web App (PWA), giving you a fast, app-like experience through your phone’s browser with no app store required. The PWA works on iPhone, Android, and privacy-focused devices like Fairphone and GrapheneOS, by saving the login page to your home screen. Read more about the Runbox mobile app.
Can I use my own domain name with Runbox?
You can host your own domain with Runbox by adding it to your account and updating your domain’s MX records to point to Runbox. Once set up, you can create email addresses and unlimited aliases on your domain. The number of domains you can add depends on your plan — from 1 domain on Micro up to 100 on Max250. Find out more about custom domains.
Does Runbox have a calendar and contacts?
Runbox includes an integrated calendar and address book alongside your email. The calendar supports recurring events, time zone settings, and syncs across all your devices via CalDAV. Contacts sync via CardDAV, keeping your address book consistent across desktop and mobile clients. Both work with standard apps including Apple Calendar, Apple Contacts, Thunderbird, and most Android and iOS calendar and contacts apps. Learn more about setting up calendar and contacts.
What is the maximum email attachment size?
Runbox supports a maximum message size of 100 MB, which applies across all plans. This covers the total size of the email including any attachments.
Is my inbox protected from spam and viruses?
Runbox automatically scans all incoming email for viruses and blocks harmful attachments and links before they reach your inbox. Spam filtering identifies and quarantines unwanted email, so only messages that matter get through.
You can also set up unlimited custom filters to automatically sort, forward, or block incoming mail based on your own criteria — giving you full control over how your inbox is organised. Runbox never scans your email for advertising or data mining purposes.
What are email aliases and plus addressing?
Email aliases are additional addresses that all deliver to your main inbox — useful for organizing incoming mail, protecting your primary address from spam, or presenting a different address for different purposes (e.g., shopping@yourname.com vs. work@yourname.com) without managing separate accounts. Every Runbox account includes 100 aliases on Runbox domains, and unlimited aliases if you use your own custom domain.
Plus addressing lets you create address variations on the fly by adding a “+” and any word after your username — like yourname+newsletter@runbox.com — without setting anything up in advance. Mail still arrives in your main inbox, but the “+word” makes it easy to filter, sort, or immediately spot where an address may have been shared or leaked.
How do I migrate from another provider?
Moving to Runbox involves two steps: setting up your account and importing your existing email. If using a custom domain, you’ll update DNS records to point to Runbox. Then use the IMAP Import tool to bring existing messages across without deleting anything from the old account. Runbox supports migration from all major providers including Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud, and GMX. Runbox Support can also complete the migration on your behalf for an additional fee.
