Norwegian Energy

“I initially switched for environmental reasons, but I came to appreciate Runbox not for what they do, but what they don’t do. They don’t sell my data. They don’t scrape keywords from my correspondence and sell it to advertisers. And they do not support causes that run counter to my beliefs like many of your standard free e-mail providers do.”

100% certified renewable energy

Our email infrastructure runs on 100% certified renewable electricity — a mix of 87% hydro-power alongside thermal, solar, and wind power, supplied by a Certified Eco-Lighthouse provider and backed by ISO 14001 certification and LOS Energy AS 100% Renewable Energy Guarantee.

Located near the Arctic, our data center takes advantage of Norway’s naturally cool climate to cool its servers efficiently, cutting energy consumption well below what’s typical for the industry.

Our data center goes a step further still: waste heat generated by our servers is repurposed to warm thousands of local homes through municipal district heating — turning what would otherwise be discarded energy into a shared community resource.

Our shared responsibility

The changing of the planet’s climate demands urgent, collective action to mitigate the damage to our planet. Technology companies, as major contributors to global energy consumption and carbon emissions, bear a unique responsibility to lead the charge in driving environmental sustainability.

At Runbox, we believe that technology should empower people while protecting the planet’s biosphere and ecological balance. Our mission is to provide sustainable, secure, and private email services that support democratic values and human rights while emphasising responsibility and stewardship for our environment.

Carbon-negative emissions

Our email service runs entirely on 100% renewable energy, ensuring carbon-neutral operations and minimizing our environmental impact. We recognize that some aspects of our operations still leave a footprint, so we double our offset efforts for any remaining emissions—guaranteeing a carbon-negative service.

We are proud to support Trefadder, a Norwegian initiative dedicated to reforestation through partnerships with local farms. This program captures and reduces atmospheric CO₂, promotes sustainable land use, strengthens rural communities, and helps restore Norway’s landscapes for generations to come.
